Ever-green Ironwoman Hayley Bateup today secured her place in the 2012/13 Kellogg’s Nutri-Grain Ironwoman Series after an impressive two days of racing at Tugun on the Gold Coast.
The 2012/13 Season will be Bateup’s 16th year on the professional circuit but was one that not even Bateup herself was sure would be a possibility after a second shoulder reconstruction in the off-season.
“I honestly tossed up whether or not I would be forced to retire but complete recovery from the surgery and a three-year contract with new club Mermaid Beach has given me a new lease of life,” said Bateup.
“I didn’t even feel a twinge all weekend which was a relief and the support I received from everyone was great. The Mermaid Beach crew are great people and the support they have provided has been amazing. I have a new coach in Julian Norton-Smith and I came here with a point to prove that I was back.”
Bateup was back to her devastating best over the two day competition and will be one to watch in the upcoming Coolangatta Gold on October 14.
