THE Nutri-Grain Ironman series makes its way to Newcastle Beach this Sunday.

As the sport begins to regain traction in the competitive television market, it is a fitting destination.

It has been several years since the series has come to the city and in that time it has undergone a revolution of sorts – reverting back to the format and structure of the former Uncle Tobys glory days.

Many legendary sporting stars have slugged it out in Newcastle, with a smattering of them still involved. Legends such as Ky Hurst, Phil Clayton, Shannon Eckstein and Zane Holmes will go up against the upstarts Caine Eckstein, Matt Poole and Kendrick Louis.

In the women’s, Courtney Hancock and Liz Pluimers will continue to throw down the gauntlet to veterans Kirsty Holmes and Hayley Bateup.

So far the series has been a battle of supremacy between young and old, with this weekend’s competition providing the best opportunity for athletes to establish their overall position on top.

On Sunday, competitors will compete in the cut-throat eliminator format.

This format usually lends itself to a more power-based athlete – three competitors are eliminated after each race resulting in eight competitors remaining for the fifth and final race.

Last year, Matt Poole blasted to a surprise victory at Bondi.

This year, Kendrick Louis has the series lead.

Louis’ consistent peformance and ability in this format make him an easy favourite.

However, the old guard have been just as present, with Hurst dominating at Portsea and Phil Clayton also sniffing around for a win.
